Synopsis
This book reviews the history of pathogenic parenting models in the context of Schizophrenia - the view held by many professionals in the Twentieth Century that parents were responsible either for the disorder itself, or the failure of the disorder to remit.Dr Ferriter examines the history of psychiatry and traces the historical roots of such pathogenic parenting models, drawing out the themes of: the rival claims of organic and non-organic explanations of disorder, therapeutic optimism and therapeutic pessimism and rivalry between the medical professions and the non-medical for supremacy in the treatment of the mentally disordered. He then reviews the literature that explores the experiences of the parents themselves and their relations with mental health professionals. This book also contains the results of a recent study, carried out by the author, on the experiences of the parents of patients with Schizophrenia. A number of issues are explored in this study including issues of blame and guilt, the quality of interaction between mental health professionals and the parents and the relevance of attribution theory as an explanation of why parents might still experience self-blame, even when they have nothing to blame themselves for.
